SJIS Team Vision Day
"If you're working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed. The vision pulls you." ~ Steve Jobs ~
Our entire staff team, management and Board of Governors got together for "Vision Day" - a vision casting and team building day on SJIS. Hearing on the latest updates of the campus development, student recruitment as well as ongoing progress on academic preparations, it was a meaningful day for us moving forward together as one with a vision for a new era of education in Kluang. Are you excited for January 2020?
Here at SJIS, YES WE ARE!

Poetry with G4
Just like how superman takes on a different persona when he puts on the cape, we made special "Poet's Glasses" for ourselves to wear when we write poetry! When the glasses go on, so does my poetic brain! I think I'm ready to write some Haiku-s, Shape Poems, & Cinquains! Stay tuned for our some of our word wizards' work!

Round Robin Creative Writing Exercise (G10)
No, that's not just a crumpled piece of paper, it's a Round Robin Creative Writing exercise recently done in our G10 English as First Language class. When everybody chips in to help write each other's stories, that's called cooperative learning. It's also pretty fun for those who have run out of creative ideas!
Also check out some of their creative and analytical writing pieces! I particularly liked the write up entitled "Anxiety". Well done!

Lunchtime duties
Who says mealtimes are just for eating? It's been years since we started the lunchtime duties, even the first graders aren't spared! It's comforting to know the kids still do it with lots of smiles, laughs and a knack of creativity!
P.S. check out the incredibly neat stack of bowls! #makingchoresfun

I think the Japanese agree with us on this quote!

Cooking Class
Part of wholistic education is addressing the different skills children and teenagers need to develop as they grow up. One of the most useful ones being - culinary skills! Here's the G7 students making "Potato & Spring Onion Cakes", having learnt up its recipe and the skills involved in making them. I got to taste a bite of their finished product, and I must say . . . I'm impressed!

Art Class
It was their rest and play time but nobody wanted to play, they were instead found laughing and giggling in a row at the window, tracing their symmetrical artwork against the sunlight. One figured it was easier to do their art & drawing against the light, so everyone followed suit. Who said good children only sat quietly at their seats?

HanDong Global Leadership Camp
This summer, Seri Jubli sent a team of students and teachers to participate in Han Dong Summer Leadership School, organized by HanDong Global University Korea. Besides learning the culture, practicing leadership, and improving on interpersonal skills . . . I think they also got to say 'Hi' to our SJ alumni! Can you spot him?

Mathematics with KS1
So... what time is it Mr. Wolf? Children are innately kinesthetic and tactile learners. When we learn how engage them at these entry points, then even seemingly 'boring' subjects like maths can be fun!

#SJISOpenDay Feature 1: SCIENCE Trial classes
Educational concept: Kinesthetic learning
We believe learning is always better when learning is done kinesthetically through the physical application of knowledge, with hands-on experience of the Science concept. How well can water insulate heat? The kids got a literal HANDS on experience with the fire! How exactly does colour pigments mix with different chemicals? Mix and see for yourself!

#SJISOpenDay Feature 2: ENGLISH & ART Trial classes
Educational concept: Integrated learning
Integrated learning occurs when multiple subjects are intentionally integrated into a single class, teaching children that learning occurs across different subjects and in every situation - like life itself! These trial classes featured an integrated mix of English reading skills + English speaking skills + art&craft skills + people skills!

Educational concept: creating Optimal learning envionment (OLE)
Creating the best possible environment for learning - a.k.a Optimal Learning Envrionment (OLE) - is so much more than comfortable chairs and decent room temperatures. The reading tent was meant to create a reading environment with minimal audiovisual distractions within a comfortable enclosed space to maximise the children's concentration in reading. Many of our visitors at the tent even went home with their books!

A big thanks to our student and teacher team who hosted our many many guests on their school tours that day! Holiday English Course Nov 2019
From November 26th to 29th 2019, SJIS held its annual Holiday English Course for upper primary students at our new campus grounds. Our English as First Language trainers - Teacher Sze and Teacher Renu did an excellent job training the Holiday English Course children in the 4 English skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. The kids got to learn first hand how English isn't just about memorizing and reading, it's so much more than that! Congratulations to all who completed the course and to the outstanding students who went home with prizes! See you next year!
